JEE Advanced 2027 Exam Overview

JEE Advanced is the next stage of the IIT admission process after JEE Main. Students who meet the required JEE Main criteria can register for JEE Advanced. Performance in JEE Advanced is then used for admission to eligible undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs through JoSAA counselling. Unlike JEE Main, JEE Advanced focuses strongly on concept application, logical thinking and multi-step problem solving. The core JEE Advanced structure currently includes two compulsory computer-based papers, each covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Both papers must be attempted for a candidate's result and rank to be prepared.

JEE Advanced 2027 Eligibility

The official eligibility rules for 2027 have not yet been announced. Students should therefore treat the points below as an expected continuation of the latest rules, not as final 2027 criteria.

1. JEE Main Performance

Under the 2026 rule, candidates had to be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE Main. A similar shortlisting system is expected for 2027, but the final number will be confirmed in the 2027 brochure.

2. Number of Attempts

The latest rule allows a candidate to attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

3. Class 12 Appearance

If the current pattern continues, candidates appearing for JEE Advanced 2027 would normally be expected to have first appeared for Class 12 or an equivalent examination in 2026 or 2027, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. The final passing-year conditions must be checked after the 2027 eligibility rules are released. The 2026 rules allowed first-time Class 12 appearances from 2025 or 2026.

4. Age Requirement

JEE Advanced has a specific age criterion, along with relaxation for eligible SC, ST and PwD candidates. The exact date-of-birth condition for 2027 should be added only after the official 2027 eligibility notice is published. The 2026 rules required general candidates to be born on or after October 1, 2001, with five years of relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates.

5. Previous IIT Admission

Restrictions also apply to candidates who have already accepted or joined an IIT seat in earlier years, with certain exceptions defined in the eligibility rules. Students with a previous IIT allotment or admission should carefully read the official 2027 eligibility conditions before registering.

Important: JEE Advanced Eligibility and IIT Admission Eligibility Are Different

Qualifying to appear for JEE Advanced does not automatically mean that a candidate meets every condition for admission to an IIT. Under the latest IIT admission rules, candidates also had to satisfy either:

  • At least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12, with 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates, or
  • Be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of their respective board.
